What is impressed current cathodic protection (ICCP)?
ICCP uses a transformer rectifier to drive protective DC current from inert anodes onto the structure. Unlike sacrificial anodes, the current is adjustable at the rectifier and the anodes consume very slowly, so ICCP suits long pipelines, tank bottoms, platforms and large or high-resistivity assets where a high, controllable current is needed.
MMO, high-silicon cast iron or flexible linear — which ICCP anode?
MMO (titanium) is the modern default — lightweight, dimensionally stable and long-lived, for pipelines, tank bottoms and concrete. High-silicon cast iron is a robust, cost-effective groundbed anode for soil and water. Flexible linear anodes give very uniform current at low voltage for shielded or poorly-coated structures. What is a groundbed, and why coke backfill?
A groundbed is the array of impressed-current anodes installed in the soil — in a shallow horizontal trench or a deep vertical borehole — to return current to the structure. Anodes are surrounded by calcined-petroleum-coke backfill, which lowers the anode-to-earth resistance and shifts most of the consumption to the carbon, extending anode life.
ICCP or sacrificial anodes — which do I need?
Sacrificial anodes are self-powered and suit marine structures, ship hulls and short or well-coated pipelines. ICCP suits long pipelines, tank bottoms and large or high-resistivity assets where a higher, adjustable current is required. PCX supplies both galvanic anodes and complete ICCP anode and equipment packages.
