What is tower packing?

Tower packing is the mass-transfer media that fills a packed column, creating a large wetted surface where gas and liquid meet so that distillation, absorption, stripping or scrubbing can take place. It divides into two families — random (dumped) packing and structured (arranged) packing — each offered in metal, plastic and ceramic. PCX sources both from qualified international manufacturing partners and supplies them to your column specification. In Thai industry this is the packing inside a distillation or absorption column (วัสดุ packing ในหอกลั่น / หอดูดซับ) — not the plastic bio-media used in wastewater bio-filters, even where a ring shape looks similar.

RANDOM PACKING

Random Packing

Cost-effective packing media offering high flux capacity and excellent corrosion resistance. Randomly dumped into the column, these shapes create high surface area contact between liquid and vapor phases. Available in metal, plastic and ceramic.

STRUCTURED PACKING

Structured Packing

High-efficiency corrugated packing with very low pressure drop characteristics. Designed for demanding vacuum and high-purity separation processes where minimal pressure drop is critical. Available in metal, plastic and ceramic.

What is tower packing?

Tower packing is the mass-transfer media that fills a packed column, creating a large wetted surface where gas and liquid meet so that distillation, absorption, stripping or scrubbing can take place. It comes in two families — random (dumped) packing and structured (arranged) packing — in metal, plastic or ceramic. In Thai industry this is the packing used inside a distillation or absorption column (วัสดุ packing ในหอกลั่น / หอดูดซับ), and the same random-packing rings are also widely used in water and wastewater work — as scrubber and air-stripper packing and as trickling-filter media that carries the biofilm.

Can tower packing be used for water and wastewater treatment?

Yes. The same random-packing rings are used in gas scrubbers and odour-control towers, in air strippers and degasifiers, and as trickling-filter media where bacteria grow on the packing surface to treat the water. Plastic rings (PP, PVC) are the usual choice for this service. Random vs structured packing — which should I use?

Random packing is dumped into the column as loose pieces — it is lower cost, robust, easy to install and re-bed, and copes well with fouling and larger diameters, which makes it the default for absorption, stripping and scrubbing duty. Structured packing is made of arranged corrugated sheets — it gives higher efficiency (lower HETP) and a very low pressure drop, which suits vacuum distillation and high-purity separation where every theoretical stage and every millibar counts. Which material — metal, plastic or ceramic?

Metal packing gives the highest strength, the thinnest walls (so the most open area) and handles high temperature and pressure. Plastic packing (PP, PVC, PVDF) is light, low cost and resists corrosion, but is limited by temperature. Ceramic packing withstands high temperature together with strong acids and aggressive chemicals, at the cost of being brittle and heavier. Each family — random and structured — is offered in all three materials; send us the service and we will confirm the material.

How is tower packing selected and sized?

Packing type, size and material are matched to the column diameter, the separation duty and the vapour and liquid loads — a smaller packing size gives more surface area and efficiency but a higher pressure drop. PCX sources random and structured packing from qualified international manufacturing partners and supplies it to your specification, for new columns, revamps and packing replacement.
