Ceramic Structured Packing

Extruded ceramic corrugated structured packing for corrosive, high-temperature and vacuum distillation, absorption and heat recovery.

Extruded ceramic corrugated structured packing — types X & Y

Ceramic Corrugated Packing

Extruded ceramic corrugated structured packing made of single-layer corrugated sheets assembled into cylindrical blocks. The vertically oriented corrugations eliminate horizontal flow-resisting surfaces, greatly reducing liquid/vapour channeling for more effective gas–liquid contact. It combines high separation efficiency with low pressure drop, high mechanical and thermal stability and excellent acid resistance — well suited to corrosive, high-temperature and vacuum service. Capacity improves by up to 50% and efficiency by up to 25% over standard ceramic saddle packing.

  • Ceramic — SiO₂ ≥72%, Al₂O₃ ≥23%
  • Types X (30°, higher capacity) and Y (45°, higher efficiency)
  • Models 100–700 · acid resistance ≥99.5% · up to 800 °C

Applications: refining corrosive mixtures with strict pressure-drop and stage requirements; vacuum distillation of organic acids and halogenated organics; absorption and recovery of nitric and concentrated sulphuric acid; chemical-plant air purification; heat exchange and demisting; catalyst carrier

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I use ceramic structured packing?

Ceramic corrugated structured packing is chosen where a corrosive mixture must be distilled or absorbed under strict pressure-drop and theoretical-stage requirements — for example vacuum distillation of organic acids and halogenated organics, recovery of nitric and concentrated sulphuric acid, and chemical-plant air purification. It combines high efficiency and low pressure drop with acid and high-temperature resistance.

What acids and temperatures does it resist?

Ceramic corrugated packing has an acid resistance of ≥99.5% and a maximum operating temperature of about 800 °C, with crush strength ≥130 MPa and water absorption ≤0.5%. It resists most corrosive acids (the usual exception being hydrofluoric acid).

What is the difference between the X and Y types?

The Y type uses a 45° corrugation angle for higher efficiency (more theoretical plates per metre), while the X type uses a 30° angle for higher capacity and lower pressure drop. Both are offered across the 100–700 m²/m³ surface-area range in the model table.

How does it compare with ceramic saddle packing?

Compared with standard ceramic saddle (random) packing, the corrugated structured form improves capacity by up to 50% and efficiency by up to 25%, with a pressure drop per theoretical stage more than 60% lower — and it gives greater heat recovery in Regenerative Thermal Oxidiser (RTO) applications.
