What is a sacrificial anode?
A sacrificial (galvanic) anode is a block of an active metal — magnesium, aluminium or zinc — electrically connected to a steel structure. Because it sits lower on the galvanic series, it corrodes preferentially and drives a protective current onto the structure, with no external power source. The anode is consumed over its design life and periodically replaced.
Magnesium, aluminium or zinc — which sacrificial anode should I use?
Magnesium has the highest driving voltage and is the default for buried pipelines and tanks in high-resistivity soil and freshwater. Aluminium (Al-Zn-In) gives the highest capacity per unit weight and is the primary choice for seawater and offshore service. Zinc is the stable, well-understood option for seawater and ship hulls. Send us the environment (soil, freshwater or seawater) and we will recommend the alloy.
Sacrificial anode or impressed current (ICCP) — what is the difference?
Sacrificial anodes are self-powered by the anode alloy and suit marine structures, ship hulls, buried tanks and short or well-coated pipelines with a defined current demand. Impressed-current (ICCP) systems use an external DC rectifier and inert anodes, and suit long pipelines, tank bottoms and large or high-resistivity assets where a higher, adjustable current is needed. PCX supplies both.

We do not carry out the corrosion-engineering design ourselves, but for straightforward requirements our international manufacturing partners can assist with anode sizing from your data.
